Virginia
Art Educators Conference
Sheraton Hotel, Roanoke,VA
November 3 - 5, 2011
We
kept our leaves on just for the visitors: orange, yellow, red and
brown blend beautifully on Mill Mountain. We were inside the Sheraton,
enjoying what others can teach. I gave a presentation on how to
make small sculptures out of soapstone.
My
first class was "Sculptural Headwear Inspired by Architecture".
Angela Winters taught us that hats and buildings must balance. Strange
is acceptable, but they must endure the elements.
"Here
There Be Dragons" by Julie Cacciola and Rhonda Alley filled
me with inspiration to create a whimsical English-style dragon.
She smiled and was happy to see us as she emerged from the clay.
Dennis
Hwang, the keynote speaker of Google Doodles fame, made all art
teachers proud. He made as all feel, "Yes, we can help the
next successful artist".
