Winter's
Nap is an example of the beautiful finish possible with Virginia Soapstone. After
carving I finish the surface by wet-sanding, by hand, in stages from 60 to 600
grit. The final result is a high gloss finish, almost like a mirror.
Virginia
Soapstone is the hardest of the soapstones that I use. It comes from a quarry
in Albemarle County, Virginia, near Charlottesville. Native Americans used it
for bowls and ornaments, which can be seen in museums today.

of stone I use.
